A Morning Kayaking the Mangroves

Mangrove canal near BigHugHome, still and green at sunrise

The canal behind BigHugHome doesn't look like much from the deck — a quiet stretch of green water, a few moored longtail boats, mangrove trees leaning in from both banks. It's only once you're sitting low in a kayak, paddle in hand, that it opens up.

Why go at sunrise

The tide and the light both matter here. Go out within an hour or two of sunrise and the canal is at its calmest — no wind yet, no boat traffic, and the water throws back a near-perfect reflection of the mangroves and the sky. It's also cooler, which matters more than it sounds like it should once you're forty minutes into paddling.

By mid-morning the canal wakes up: fishers heading out, the odd tour boat, kids swimming off the jetties further along. Still worth doing, just a different kind of trip.

What the paddle actually involves

We keep two-person kayaks at the dock, so this works whether you're going out solo, as a couple, or splitting a family across a couple of boats. No experience is necessary — the canal here is sheltered and the current is mild, so it's a genuinely easy paddle, not a workout.

What you'll actually see

Mostly quiet. Mudskippers flicking across the exposed roots at low tide, herons standing still enough to look fake, the occasional startled splash you never quite catch the source of. It's less about spotting specific wildlife and more about the stillness — paddling under a canopy of mangrove branches with the sound cut down to your own paddle strokes and the odd bird call.

If you keep going past the first bend, the channel narrows and the trees close in overhead. That stretch is the reason to come back a second morning before you leave.

Good to know

Tides here matter more than they might elsewhere — at low tide, some of the smaller channels get too shallow to paddle through cleanly. Ask us the night before and we'll tell you the best window for the following morning based on that day's tide.
